Description :The Community Support Worker will work closely with community members, other staff and community partners at the outdoor gathering space located downtown. In this position the Community Support Worker is responsible for building healthy relationships, creating a safe space and assisting the vulnerable population in their life journey.Position Type: Fixed-Term, Casual
Position Duration: May to September 2024
Schedule: Flexible Schedule, (Wednesday to Saturday)
Reporting to: Director of Operations
Location: Kamloops, B.C.

RRF#: 719MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Demonstrate empathy and deep respect for community members, team members, volunteers and community partners
  • To assist and advocate for community members on their personal goals by collaborating with community partners and other Mustard Seed programs
  • Working outside with community partners to connect community members to family, support groups or relevant networks
  • Manage conflict and provide crisis intervention as required
  • Ensure services are delivered in a respectful and safe environment while enforcing facilities rules, expected code of conduct, and building cleanliness of the facilities
  • Maintain specific records, stats and incident reports
  • Participate in briefings and de-briefings with both staff and volunteer groups when necessary
  • Ensure daily tidiness and cleanliness of work area
  • Support and work alongside volunteers, act as a positive Mustard Seed ambassador
  • Required to abide by all Health & Safety protocols including completing a report for all incidents that occur, including near misses, in a timely manner
  • Other duties as may be assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
  • Diploma and/or certificate in human services, social work or relevant fields is an asset
  • A demonstrated passion to be involved in ending poverty in British Columbia is essential
  • Experience working with individuals with substance abuse issues and mental illness is an asset
  • Ability to prioritize tasks in a fast pace environment
  • Adaptable and flexible
  • Good knowledge of local First Nations culture is considered an asset
  • Experience working in a volunteer-based organization is considered an asset
  • Strong communication (written and verbal) and conflict resolution skills
  • A proactive and self-starter individual
  • A team player, who works collaboratively and has a ‘teachable spirit’
  • Ability to work independently and in a cross-functional team
  • Integrity, discretion and tact dealing with confidential matters
  • Valid Standard First Aid, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI), Food Safety Certification, and any other relevant training is strongly desired
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Moderate physical effort (standing, walking, sitting, lifting) as staff will be stationed outdoors for the entirety of the shift
  • The position will require ongoing compassionate care, frequent manual labor, conflict resolution, de-escalation and organizational ability while working directly with a vulnerable population
  • This position is often fast-paced and requires moderate amount of mental effort to analyze information and problem solve
  • Employees are to be aware that many of our clients may experience difficulties or impairment at times, which could result in them uttering threats, discriminatory statements, and other insults at your person. This may in a raised voice, or in seeing unpredictable behaviour up to and including the possibility of them becoming aggressive.
  • Training on how to respond is provided, but this is to be considered typical working conditions. Many of our clients are unaware of the impact of these comments.
