Laurier's Centre for Indigegogy is one example of how Laurier honours Indigenous knowledge.Position SummaryThe Communications Operator & Security Guard is generally the first line of communication between the Communications Centre and Special Constables, members of the public and University constituents.The Communications Operator & Security Guard enables quick response time by obtaining accurate and complete information when answering emergency and non-emergency telephone calls from the public. The Communications Operator & Security Guard must respond efficiently and appropriately to calls by dispatching officers or redirecting administrative calls for service. It is the incumbent's duty to support officers by operating, monitoring and responding to all radio transmissions. They must also ensure that records and information are complete by correctly operating various computer systems and the Service's Records Management System.The incumbent is required to have a Security Guard license as they will be required to perform security guard duties including calls for access, exam transportation, crowd control, and officer replacement during absences.AccountabilitiesDispatch
  • Receive emergency and non-emergency calls for service, and dispatch the appropriate personnel to calls.
  • Gather information from callers and relay pertinent information to personnel who are responding to the call.
  • Contact Waterloo Regional Police Service in regard to gathering CPIC information on persons or vehicles that SCS are investigating, as well as to acquire WRPS Occurrence numbers to correspond with SCS investigations.
  • Monitor security cameras, as well as fire and security alarms, and dispatch appropriate service to calls.
  • Make calls for additional assistance that officers may require, such as EMS, Fire, WRPS, towing company, taxi, FOOT Patrol, WLU ERT, and other officers or departments as required
Security Functions
  • Assist with security functions/events including crowd control and assisting officers with security concerns
Transportation of exams and other sensitive documentationRespond to calls for access to rooms and buildingsUnderstand and utilize multiple operating systems for reporting, recording video content from security cameras, property management, and alarm systems.Update, verify, and maintain information in a variety of databases and spreadsheets.Attend and participate in staff meetings.Maintain key control for on-call Physical Resources staff, contractors, and various student groups. Ensuring proper sign-out procedures.Keep track of officers throughout the shift; keep status of officers updated in D3 Reporting system.Remain current on Policies, Procedures, and day-to-day campus changes.Laurier is a multi-campus University and the incumbent must make him/herself familiar with security as it pertains to each unique campus.Reports
  • Record all information and document activities using the Service's Records Management Reporting System.
  • Generate incident reports for officers when requested.
  • Coordinate with the Supervising Officer on duty to establish and maintain an up to date Daily Brief.
Records ManagementAccept found property turned into Special Constable Service, and document it using Returnity software. Attempt to contact the owners of found property and make arrangements for property to be returned. Ensure documentation when property has been returned.Performs other duties as assigned.QualificationsPost-secondary school education together with 2 years' related experience working as a receptionist with a switchboard or a dispatch system or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Must possess a Security Guard License approved by the Ministry of Community Safety & Correctional ServicesExcellent communication skills including:Written communication skills to log call details, update information on incidents and provide written responses to inquiries.Oral communication and interpersonal skills to listen actively and respond in a composed manner to emergency calls regarding incidents from persons who may be distressed or emotional, and to be able to calm them down sufficiently to obtain concise details in a timely manner.Professional oral communication and interpersonal skills to interact with officers,
emergency services personnel, and Waterloo Regional Police via telephone. During emergency dispatch, clearly and efficiently convey information while coordinating multiple people and agencies. Provide dispatch services for non-emergency situations.Must be fluent in both oral and written EnglishAbility to organize, prioritize, multi task and problem solve under stressful situationsMust be able to successfully clear a personal background check conducted by Waterloo Regional Police ServiceMust possess basic computer skills and have the ability to learn to use programs regularly used bySCSMust have Emergency First Aid and CPR CertificateOACP Certificate an assetMust be able to pass hearing and vision testingCompensation:Rate of Pay: $25.94 per hourThis is a full-time, continuing position, working an average of 84 hours every two weeks. Shifts will rotate between 7.5 and 9.25 hours, with a half hour unpaid lunch.
