A rewarding opportunity for a Simulation Engineer / Process Developer with process simulation and modelling experience in the process metallurgy field now exists in our Process Simulation & Modelling Group, which is a team of skilled metallurgists and engineers based in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. We focus on providing support for both the long-term strategic growth and shorter-term plant operational needs of companies requiring expertise in extractive metallurgy. We complement our skills with the knowledge of our XPS partners in the fields of , and .The group is specialized in multiphysics, thermodynamic and high-level metallurgical processes simulation and in developing custom software tools and applications to support the metallurgy industry to carry out simulation and modelling in all aspects of metallurgy, from high temperature pyrometallurgical reactors to hydrometallurgical processes, acid plants, industrial vessels and process, etc. Services are offered at a competitive price-to-quality ratio. The Process Simulation & Modelling Group uses a series of tools to deliver highly specialized solutions that reduce risk and add value to our client’s project:
  • Detailed computational fluid dynamics, heat and mass transfer and reactive flow using COMSOL Multiphysics®
for new or existing metallurgical plants, using SysCAD®, ChemApp™, Arena®, Metsim®, FactSage™. * Private thermodynamic database development covering ferrous, non-ferrous, precious and light metals industry.
  • In-house development of software libraries, solvers and applications to integrate thermodynamic-based process modelling to multiphysics simulation or to develop fully integrated digital twin metallurgical models into industrial plant control system.
Responsibilities & AccountabilitiesThe primary functions of the Simulation Engineer / Process Developer are to:
  • Develop and support process models in COMSOL, SysCad, ChemApp, FactSage, SimuSage, Metsim, and Arena.
  • Support software development and maintenance of in-house simulation libraries, apps and tools for metallurgical process simulation.
  • Write project proposals and market the XPS business.
  • Manage projects by meeting turnaround (schedule), quality and safety standards.
  • Learn and develop specialized knowledge and expertise for our clients .
The Simulation Engineer / Process Developer works closely with the Process Simulation and Modelling Senior Engineer to develop and carry out computer based simulation of industry processes and vessels at high and detailed level. S/He will work on projects which can commonly contain a process design, process modelling, simulation of existing or new reactors/vessels, software development and in some cases, coordination and data analysis from laboratory, pilot or plant trials and testing. Under the supervision of the Manager, Process Control, Simulation & Modelling, the Simulation Engineer/Process Developer will be responsible in each project for the financial aspects, cost controls and assessment of competitiveness. The incumbent is also expected to participate in operations plant support, which includes a focus on improving safety, process troubleshooting/optimization and metallurgical plant improvement. In this role you are a consultant to Operations project engineer/superintendents and assist in developing schedules and execution of continuous improvement projects. Naturally, we desire you to have extensive knowledge of process metallurgy and computer-based simulation techniques.Qualifications/SkillsThe ideal candidate will possess:
  • A degree in metallurgical, chemical engineering or related degree and/or related experience, or
  • A degree in computer science or mathematics with strong knowledge of metallurgical or chemical engineering
  • Five years of relevant work experience in process metallurgy or advanced degrees
  • Proficiency in any of: SysCad, Metsim, FactSage, Comsol, SimuSage, Arena, ChemApp
  • Experience in Object Oriented Programming, most desirable is experience in C#, Python or C (experience in other computer programing languages is beneficial)
  • Comfortable with distributed version control software such as Git.
  • Strong background in linear algebra and optimization techniques is highly recommended
  • Experience with base metals (both oxide & sulphide), precious metals and rare earths
  • Strong project management skills and the ability to thrive in a dynamic team
  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills
  • Strong knowledge of MS Office Suite or equivalent products
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proven time management skills and strong attention to detail
