SUMMER STUDENT - Family Support Worker - Family Centre - Canada Summer Jobs Program (8 weeks 35 hrs )

The work of Good Shepherd is based on a fundamental belief in providing hope and restoring dignity to the most vulnerable members of our community. Our services include emergency food transitional housing and education for homeless and street-involved youth; hospice palliative care; community mental health programs; and supportive housing programs. We are committed to integrating Harm Reduction practices into our programs and to prioritizing the rights, dignity, and choices of those who use substances. By integrating a Harm Reduction framework at Good Shepherd, we can decrease barriers to service and better support some of our community's most marginalized members.

This summer student opportunity is with our Good Shepherd - Family Centre

How You Will Make an Impact

Provide primary support to families residing in the emergency shelter. Assessment, intake, housing-based case management, crisis prevention and intervention, supportive counselling, education, advocacy, accompanying residents on apartment viewings, facilitating long term housing success, and linkages with other community services. Maintain safety and security of the shelter facility including hourly facility checks, answering phones and doors, and apartment inspections. Residential tasks including unit turnovers, unit cleaning, cleaning of common spaces, preparing coffee and breakfast, and house laundry.

What You'll Bring to Our Team

• Post-secondary education or interest in social services or a related field
• Have knowledgeable of and possibly some experience working with a range of issues impacting families including homelessness, violence against women and children, immigration, poverty, mental illness and substance use
• Understand and be comfortable working from a client-centered, housing first perspective
• Comfortable operating within an anti-racist and anti-oppression framework.
• Fluency in a 2nd language, CPR certification, and a driver's license are assets
• Meet all of the guidelines set out by the Government for the Canadian Summer Jobs Program

Hiring Criteria - the following criteria is established by Canada Summer Job:

This temporary full-time position is funded by Service Canada for youth between the ages of 15 to 30 years of age.

• Applicants may be more than 30 years of age at the end of the employment period as long as they were 30 at the beginning of the employment period.
• As per the Summer Canada Jobs Program criteria:
  • International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada.
  • Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, youth visa or work visa are ineligible.
