Your Opportunity:

The Edmonton Zone, Continuing Care, Palliative and End of Life Care Programs (PEOLP) is recruiting a dynamic Instructor- Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE) to join the Royal Alexander Hospital (RAH), Acute Palliative Care Team. The team is a small, cohesive group of specially trained nurses and palliative care physicians who provide consultative palliative services to patients within the RAH. This position reports to the Continuing Care, Program Manager for PEOLP and is based out of the RAH. The position may support other acute care facilities. Responsibilities and Competencies: Assess for education needs of stakeholders and the identification of appropriate learning resources. Develops, collates, facilitates, and evaluates education and tools pertaining to palliative and end of life care based on principles of adult learning for staff and/or patients. Advances the palliative approach to care within the acute care setting. Acts as a role model and resource to staff for professional development and clinical competency related to palliative and end of life care delivery. Works with an interdisciplinary team and consults with managers and stakeholders to determine learning needs and operational requirements. Supports and mentors new staff and encourages best practice related to palliative care. Organizes and facilitates relevant site-based training and workshops. Attends patient visits and conferences with clinical staff to discuss patient treatment and care plans. Provides leadership and expertise in evidence-based practice related to palliative and end of life care. Representative on or chairs meetings and committees, when relevant. Maintains competence in advanced clinical practice relevant to palliative care and acts as a consultant to teams regarding clinical issues. Supports the Palliative Care Team with patient consults.

As an Instructor, you will be an expert practitioner and key educator. You will take a leadership role in the planning, coordination, implementation and evaluation of education for nursing staff including orientation, compulsory and continuing education, and clinical development. You will collaborate with management and internal partners to promote standards of clinical, educational and evidence informed practice. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Additional Required Qualifications:

At minimum five years of experience in palliative care: acute, community, and/or hospice. Experience with development, implementation, facilitation and evaluation of education materials and programming is required. Proven exemplary communication (verbal, non-verbal, and written), interpersonal, organizational, and peaceful conflict management and problem-solving skills are essential. Demonstrated leadership and teamwork abilities, along with the ability to work effectively in a self-directed environment are vital. The CNE will be based in or out of one acute care site with potential travel between sites requirements within the Edmonton Zone. Physically capable of performing nursing tasks which could include physical assessments, consulting with physicians and other team members. The understanding of patient and family centered approach to care. Openness and willingness to be coached by the team and leadership, when required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Baccalaureate degree in nursing is preferred; however, skills and experience relevant to nursing practice in palliative care will be considered. Post graduate studies or certification in adult education and/or palliative care would be an asset. Minimum three years of educator experience in an acute care setting. Current working knowledge of Connect Care and Netcare.
