From conceptual design, regulatory approval, fabrication & installation, to operations and regulatory compliance, Clearford offers everything required for any water infrastructure challenge and takes responsibility for regulatory compliance at every stage.

Scope of Position

As a member of the Operations team the Water/Wastewater OIT (Operator-in-Training) contributes to the successful operation and maintenance of Water Treatment, Water Distribution, and Supply sub-systems, as well as other Wastewater Treatment and Wastewater Collection systems operated by Clearford.

Reporting to the Hub Supervisor the OIT will perform essential services to the public and ensure that all applicable legislation, regulations, approvals, orders, and guidelines are adhered to. They will document and optimize plant performance and complete sampling needs. The OIT will perform their functions and responsibilities in a team environment with support from the Hub Supervisor, Regional Manager, Compliance Team and other Clearford support services.

Major Responsibilities

(This is not an exhaustive list of duties to be performed)

  • Perform all operational tasks and maintenance (preventative and corrective) duties for assigned facilities, (including daily rounds, system monitoring, housekeeping, regulatory sampling and deliveries to lab);
  • Communicate, using strong oral and written communication skills, to clearly describe operational items to members of the public, clients, government agencies, equipment suppliers, contractors and tradespeople, and internal staff;
  • Drive long distances, including during inclement weather;
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable legislation, regulations, approvals, orders, and guidelines;
  • Adjust, inspect and evaluate process performance and equipment to optimize efficiency and effectiveness, in accordance with established procedures;
  • Operate, monitor, and repair surface/ground water treatment plants, well-based distribution and supply systems, booster stations, and reservoirs including Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), various digital and analog instrumentation and control systems, numerous monitoring, reporting and communication systems, pressure tanks, filtration systems, continuous online analyzers, and related appurtenances, valves, hydrants etc.;
  • Operate, monitor, and repair wastewater treatment plants with varying degrees of complexity (moving bed biological Reactors (MBBRs), membrane biological reactors (MBRs), rotating biological contactors (RBCs), waterloo bio-filters (WBSs), sequencing batch reactors (SBRs), lagoons, septic systems), using Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems along with less sophisticated control systems, sewage pump stations and manholes, etc.;
  • Work independently to troubleshoot various types of equipment malfunctions, make necessary repairs using Operations and Maintenance manuals, seek input from peers by telephone or through the computer using: Teams, Skype, Zoom etc.;
  • Collect regulatory Water and Wastewater samples; microbiological, chemical, raw sewage and treated effluent using necessary Chains of Custody, proper packaging and transportation to various laboratories;
  • Conduct in-house laboratory testing utilizing handheld instruments (colorimeters or spectrophotometers);
  • Carry out process changes required to optimize treatment performance;
  • Comply with the on-call rotation schedule including evenings, weekends and statutory holidays;
  • Able to respond to varying issues at multiple sites;
  • Interpret Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Process and Instrumentation Drawings (P&IDs), reviews Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and assists with asset data collection from sites to upload into a Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS);
  • Participate in the commissioning of new treatment plants, including process optimization, instrumentation, and control as well as SCADA.
  • Maintain logs and records pertaining to system performance and conditions, in accordance with established procedures and regulatory requirements;
  • Assist in maintaining a safe work environment by using appropriate PPE and Health and Safety training;
  • Help to promote a positive working environment, present a professional approach to the client, and establish and maintain relationships between Clearford and the client;
  • All other duties as assigned.

Required, Knowledge, Experience, & Competencies

  • Minimum operating Certificate/Licenses for:

  • Water Treatment or Limited Surface Water and Limited Groundwater

  • Water Distribution and Supply

  • Wastewater Treatment

  • Wastewater Collection

  • Post-secondary education in the environmental, chemical/biological, or engineering field, considered an asset;

  • Training and certification in Confined Space Entry (CSE), Working at Heights, First Aid, Lock-Out Tag-Out, WHMIS, Transportation of Dangerous Goods are considered strong assets;

  • Good understanding of the latest technologies in the Water and Wastewater industry;

  • Basic knowledge of applicable legislation and regulations (for example, Occupational Health & Safety Act, Drinking Water Standards, Drinking Water Protection Regulations, Safe Drinking Water Act, Spills Act, etc.);

  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft software packages including Access, Project and Teams, as well as web-based data entry systems for payroll and expenses;

  • Possess a strong mechanical aptitude, and is familiar with various types of tools;

  • Demonstrated problem-solving and troubleshooting skills and a willingness to develop and grow these on the job;

  • Proactively, or by management request, maintains current training and pursues advanced certification;

  • A valid Ontario Class (full) G2 driver's license, clean driver's abstract;

  • Access to a vehicle during working hours required;

  • When applicable, a valid Ontario Class (full) G driver's license, 6 years driving experience and a clean driver's abstract are required to drive a company vehicle.

Hours of work and Travel Expectations

  • The Operator will be required to work outside of regular business hours to facilitate the Operation and Maintenance of the area;
  • The Operator will be required to work on-call shifts on a rotation basis;
  • There will be frequent travel throughout the area and periodic travel to other areas in Ontario.

What We Offer

  • The hourly rate for the Operator-in-Training ranges from $20.00 - $24.00 with overtime after 44 hours (calculated weekly) at 1.5X hourly rate, and 2.0X hourly rate for working Statutory Holidays;
