Duties

As a member of the Trail Crew, you will work as part of a team to build, repair, and maintain trails, bridges, and other trail infrastructure for Parks Canada Agency. You will provide labour services in both front- and back-country locations using hand tools, chainsaws, brush saws, and other mechanized equipment. The work is conducted outdoors in all weather conditions; it is physically demanding and requires individuals to be physically fit and adaptable.

Work environment

Parks Canada is a federal government agency responsible for the protection and presentation of Canada's outstanding natural and cultural resources through a system of national parks, national marine conservation areas and national historic sites in all regions of Canada.

Jasper National Park is the largest national park in the Canadian Rockies covering over 11,000 square kilometers. Situated within this is an extensive historic trail network with over 1000km of trails ranging from easily accessible and family friendly front country trails to iconic multi day backcountry trails passing though the remote wilderness of Jasper National Park.

Intent of the process

The result of this process will be used to fill potential year-round and seasonal GL-MAN-03 vacancies that may arise in the Jasper Field Unit. A list of qualified candidates will be established and may be used to staff identical or similar positions within Parks Canada Agency. Tenures could vary depending on the position being staffed (ie. determinate, indeterminate, seasonal, acting, assignment, part-time, full-time, etc.)

EDUCATION

  • Completion of secondary school or Public Service Commission approved alternative.

Degree equivalency

Acceptable* experience in the following areas:

  • Working outdoors and in remote areas;
  • Performing routine maintenance tasks including general repair to trails, roads, bridges, and/or landscaping;
  • Using hand and power tools directly related to trail building, landscaping, and/or grounds maintenance (ie: chainsaws, brush saws, rakes, hoes, pulaskis, etc.);
  • Carrying-out construction tasks in a team environment.
  • Acceptable experience is defined as: minimum of 1 year experience within the past 5 years.

Information on language requirements

KNOWLEDGE

  • Knowledge of safe work practices and procedures;
  • Knowledge of the proper use and maintenance of hand tools and light mechanized equipment (ie: chainsaws, brush saws, etc.).

ABILITIES

  • Ability to contribute and perform within a team environment;
  • Ability to work in adverse conditions;
  • Ability to analyze and solve operational problems while working in the field.

PERSONAL SUITABILITY

  • Takes responsibility;
  • Communicates effectively;
  • Shows initiative;
  • Exercises sound judgment.

  • Experience in operating a chainsaw;
  • Experience in carpentry and construction;
  • Experience in operating equipment such as mini excavators, skid steers, and tractors.

Conditions of employment

  • All employees of the Federal Government are required to meet Reliability Status;
  • Maintenance of a valid Class 5 Driver's License (Class L, N or other graduated license will not be accepted).

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Willingness to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and / or statutory holidays and provincial / territorial holidays;
  • Willingness to work and/or travel within the Jasper Field Unit through varied terrain, adverse weather conditions, and isolated locations using various modes of transportation (ie: Helicopter, ATV, bike, foot, etc.);
  • Must be able to live and work for up to 10 days duration in a remote location, and in varied weather conditions;
  • Willingness to undergo and pass pre-placement and periodic medical checks;
  • Extensive physical effort required to hike and / or work for prolonged periods of time;
  • Willingness to undertake vaccinations for Tetanus, Hepatitis, and Rabies;
  • Willingness to complete a certified chainsaw course;
  • Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform and personal protective equipment.
